Quebec Family Class

Canadian citizens and landed immigrants who are at lease 18 years of age are able to sponsor a near relative. In such cases, the family member needs to belong to the family class and there are certain criteria that need to be met. The family class category includes; a spouse, common-law partner or conjugal partner 16 years of older, a dependent child, and some other close relatives as well.
The Canadian citizen or landed immigrant who wishes to sponsor a relative must meet the following criteria:
- You must have complied with all previous commitments and repaid all of the amounts due if the person you sponsored received special allowances or financial assistance of last resort (social aid).
- You must be financially independent of social aid and therefore should not be receiving financial assistance of last resort. This does not apply to people with disability that are serious and permanent and is an obstacle to employment.
- If applicable, all alimony payments must have been paid within the past five years. If you have not done so on a regular basis, the outstanding amount must be repaid to meet this criterion.
- There must be no conviction or sexual offence or personal tort towards a relative or any of your spouse’s relatives. If you were acquitted or rehabilitated or have served your sentence at least 5 years ago, this charge will not be taken into account.
- If you plan on sponsoring a family member that is not part of your immediate family, you must show that you have had sufficient financial resources for the last 12 month and will continue to have sufficient financial resources for the duration of undertaking.
- When your sponsored family member gets the permanent resident status you must also be residing in Québec.
- You must not have on your record a removal order or have been kept in penitentiary or prison.
- Your spouse or common law partner that you intent to sponsor must be over 16 years of age.
- You must take the responsibility to ensure that the person you are sponsoring signs the declaration form and fully understands the terms of the sponsorship.
