Skilled Worker

Canada’s economy and social diversity relies on the immigration of skilled individuals to contribute to Canada’s work force. The skilled worker category allows for an assessment of educated applicants who have gained work experience and who are able to meet certain criteria on what is called a 6 Point Factor scale. This grid awards points for ones age, level of education, years of work experience, English and French language abilities, spousal characteristics, employability and adaptability. Foremost, a positive assessment indicates that you have the ability to become economically established in Canada. Please note that under the Skilled Worker category, applicants assume financial responsibility upon their arrival to Canada and must provide proof of their financial independence prior to selection. As such, you must establish that you have sufficient funds to support you and your accompanying family members in Canada.

In order to become eligible as a Skilled Worker, you must first demonstrate the following minimum work experience requirements including:

  • At least one year of full-time or the equivalent in part-time, continuous employment,
  • Your work experience must be in the category of Skill Type 0, or Skill Level A or B on the Canadian National Occupational Classification. NOC is the classification system which includes descriptions of all jobs in the Canadian economy (link to NOC),
  • You must have had this work experience within the last 10 years.

Demonstrating minimum financial funding:

Based on your family size, you must provide proof of financial funds which have not been borrowed or allocated from another person for your successful establishment in Canada.
